Pharmacy Club’s Talk on Medication & Fasting

Mar 6, 2025

On 5 March 2025, the Pharmacy Club of IJN College successfully organized an educational talk titled “Ubat & Puasa: Apa Perlu Anda Tahu?” This informative session took place at the IJN College Auditorium, Level 13, from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM, attracting students eager to learn about proper medication management while fasting. This engaging event aimed not only to educate students but also to foster a community of informed individuals. In the spirit of Ramadan, the session highlighted the significance of maintaining health through proper medication practices during fasting.

The highlight of the event was the insightful sharing by Mohd Shahiri Abd Ghapar, a Pharmacist from the Ministry of Health Malaysia, specializing in Pharmacy Practice & Development under the Quality Medicine Use Branch. With vast expertise in pharmaceutical care, he provided essential guidance on how individuals, particularly those with chronic conditions, can continue their medication safely during Ramadan without breaking their fast. His presentation included real-life case studies, illustrating the challenges faced by patients and practical solutions that can be implemented to overcome these hurdles.

Throughout the session, students gained valuable knowledge on:
Safe medication intake during fasting: Emphasizing the importance of timing and method of intake, participants were instructed on how to manage their medication effectively around fasting hours.
Types of medications that do not invalidate fasting: The discussion included common medications that are safe to take without compromising the fast.
Alternative methods of medication consumption: Students learned about innovative ways to adhere to their medication schedules without breaking their fast, including the use of slow-release formulations.
The risks of counterfeit medicines and how to identify MOH-approved drugs: This topic was crucial, as it equipped students with knowledge to protect themselves from unsafe products.

One of the key discussions revolved around the increasing availability of counterfeit medications in the market. The speaker emphasized the importance of verifying Ministry of Health (MOH)-approved medications to ensure quality, safety, and effectiveness. He shared alarming statistics on counterfeit drugs and presented strategies for students to identify legitimate products, such as checking packaging, batch numbers, and using verification apps. This critical information is vital for ensuring their health and safety, especially during Ramadan when many individuals are more focused on their spiritual commitments.

A total of 20 IJN College students attended the program, actively engaging in discussions and asking relevant questions about medication management during fasting. The Pharmacy Club hopes this initiative will help students and the wider community make informed decisions regarding their health during Ramadan. The interaction during the session was a testament to the students’ eagerness to learn and share their experiences, showcasing the importance of collaborative learning in a community setting.

At IJN College, we are committed to promoting health awareness and ensuring our students are equipped with evidence-based medical knowledge. Stay tuned for more educational programs that enhance healthcare understanding and empower future medical professionals. Future events will delve into various topics, including mental health awareness, nutrition during fasting, and chronic disease management, ensuring that students are well-rounded in their healthcare education.

Additionally, we are creating an online resource hub that will provide students with access to articles, research papers, and frequently asked questions about medication and fasting practices. This digital platform will serve as a valuable tool for students to enhance their understanding and stay updated on best practices in health management. Our aim is to create a supportive environment where students can continuously learn and grow in their knowledge about medications, particularly in relation to Ramadan.

As part of our commitment to health education, we are also organizing follow-up workshops where students can gain hands-on experience in medication management, including how to read prescriptions, understand dosage instructions, and the importance of adherence to medication schedules. These workshops will feature guest speakers from various healthcare fields, providing a holistic view of health management. We believe that integrating theory with practical application will empower students and help them apply their knowledge effectively.

Health and knowledge go hand in hand! As we continue to host educational talks, we encourage students to actively participate and take ownership of their health literacy. By becoming well-informed, they can advocate for themselves and others in their healthcare journeys. Together, we can build a community that prioritizes health, safety, and informed decision-making.
