As part of our ongoing commitment to mental health awareness, IJN College, in collaboration with the Student Representative Council (SRC) and our dedicated college counselors, hosted a vital forum titled “World Suicide Prevention Day: Changing the Narrative on Suicide.” This event took place in conjunction with World Suicide Prevention Day on September 13, aiming to foster open, honest discussions about suicide and mental health, and to empower students with the knowledge and tools needed to support one another.
The forum brought together 50 IJN College students, all eager to understand the complexities of suicide and contribute their thoughts on how we can collectively address and prevent these tragedies. By creating a safe space for dialogue, we sought to change the stigma surrounding mental health and suicide, and to promote a culture of empathy, understanding, and support within our community.
Understanding Suicide: A Growing Concern
Suicide is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, especially among young people aged 15-29. The stigma surrounding suicide and mental health issues often prevents individuals from seeking help when they need it the most. At IJN College, we believe that awareness and education are critical components in reducing this stigma and saving lives. Our forum focused on breaking down the barriers that prevent open discussions about suicide and mental health.
The theme of this year’s World Suicide Prevention Day, “Creating Hope Through Action,” aligns perfectly with our mission. It’s a reminder that suicide prevention is everyone’s responsibility and that each of us can take steps—big or small—to help someone in crisis. Whether it’s reaching out to a friend, offering support, or learning more about mental health resources, our actions can make a significant difference.
The Role of Students in Suicide Prevention
During the forum, students had the opportunity to hear from experts in the field of mental health and counseling. They also engaged in thought-provoking discussions about how suicide impacts individuals, families, and communities. These conversations were designed to empower students to be more proactive in recognizing the warning signs of suicide and knowing how to intervene when someone might be in distress.
One of the key takeaways from the forum was the importance of building a strong support system. Many students expressed a desire to be more involved in mental health advocacy and to work together to create a safer, more supportive environment on campus. By changing the narrative on suicide, we hope to encourage more students to seek help when they’re struggling and to reach out to their peers who might be at risk.
Mental Health Support at IJN College

Our counseling services are available year-round, offering confidential, professional guidance for those who need it. We also host regular workshops, forums, and awareness campaigns to promote mental health and wellness.

In addition to our on-campus resources, we encourage students to explore national helplines and organizations dedicated to suicide prevention, such as Befrienders Worldwide and the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline.
Taking Action for Suicide Prevention
World Suicide Prevention Day is more than just a day of awareness—it’s a call to action. Together, we can change the narrative around suicide and mental health. By speaking up, offering support, and fostering an environment of compassion and understanding, we can help save lives.
We invite all students to join us in this ongoing conversation about suicide prevention. Let’s continue to educate ourselves, support one another, and create a brighter, more hopeful future for everyone.
